Take a Rain Check.

idiom

To decline an offer or invitation now but express interest in taking it up later.

What it means...

To politely say no to something now but show you’d like to do it another time.

When you take a rain check, you’re not rejecting the idea — you’re postponing it.

It’s a friendly way to decline an invitation without closing the door.

Use it when…

—When someone can’t attend a dinner and wants to reschedule
—When a colleague declines a lunch invitation because they’re too busy
—When someone turns down an offer but wants to be considered again later

Don’t confuse with...

“Pass”

Simply decline an offer or skip it with no interest in doing it later

“Get Back to You”

Delay giving a final answer, not yet deciding yes or no

“Take a Rain Check”

Decline for now but express genuine interest in doing it later
