Privacy Policy

Thanks for visiting The Idiom Daily ("we," "us," "our"). We care about your privacy and want to be clear about what data we collect, why we collect it, and how you can control it. This policy explains it in plain English.
This policy applies to theidiomdaily.com and any services we offer through it.

1. Who We Are

The Idiom Daily is a brand built around teaching real English — the way native speakers actually talk. We publish a free online dictionary of English idioms, daily content across various social media platforms, and we're working on additional learning products. Today, this privacy policy applies to what happens on theidiomdaily.com; for data practices on our social channels, see each platform's own policy.

Under GDPR, we're the "data controller" for the information we collect on this site.

For any privacy-related question, email us at support@theidiomdaily.com.

2. Information We Collect

2.1. Information you give us

Newsletter ("Insider") signup. When you subscribe, we collect your full name, email address, the country where you're based, your native language, and your date of birth. We use this to send you updates and tailor content to you.
Contact form. If you use our contact form (e.g., for business inquiries), we collect whatever you choose to share — typically your name, email, and message.

2.2. Information collected automatically

When you visit the site, we may collect limited technical information:
  • Your approximate location (based on IP address)
  • The device and browser you're using
  • Pages you visit and how you interact with them
  • How you found us (referrer URL)
This only happens if you accept analytics cookies — see Section 3.

3. Cookies and Similar Technologies

A cookie is a small file your browser stores so a website can recognize you between visits. Here's exactly what runs on The Idiom Daily:

3.1. Essential cookies

These are required for the site to work — for example, remembering your cookie preferences. They don't track you across the web and are set regardless of your consent. They include a small set of cookies from our hosting platform, Webflow.

3.2. Analytics cookies (only if you opt in)

If you click "Accept" or enable "Analytics" in our cookie banner, we use Google Analytics to understand which idioms are popular and how visitors use the site. Google Analytics sets two cookies (_ga and _ga_*) that last up to two years. We've configured Google Analytics to anonymize IP addresses.

3.3. Marketing and personalization cookies

Our cookie banner includes toggles for Marketing and Personalization cookies. These categories are reserved for future use — we don't currently set any marketing or personalization cookies. If we start using them (e.g., advertising pixels or content personalization tools), they'll only run when you've enabled the corresponding category in the banner, and we'll update this policy.

3.4. Managing your cookie preferences

You can change your cookie choices at any time by clicking "Cookie preferences" in the footer of any page. You can also clear cookies through your browser settings.

4. How We Use Your Information

We use your information for the following purposes:
  • To send you the Insider newsletter and related updates (if you've subscribed)
  • To respond to your contact-form messages
  • To understand how visitors use the site so we can improve it
  • To understand our audience in aggregate. We may analyze information you've shared (like country, native language, and age range) alongside aggregate site usage to understand who our readers are, what content works, and what products to build next. This analysis is done at the group level — we don't single out or target individuals.
  • To tailor our content and communications. We may use aggregate insights to adjust what we publish, how we market, and which products we develop. We may also send different newsletter content to different segments (for example, beginners vs. advanced learners, or readers from different regions).
  • To keep the site secure and prevent abuse
We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers. We do not make automated decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects on you (for example, we don't use algorithms to deny you access to a product or set a personalized price).

You can unsubscribe from all marketing communications at any time using the unsubscribe link in every newsletter email.

5. Sharing Your Information

We share your data only with the service providers we rely on to operate the site. Under GDPR these are called "data processors" — they process your data on our instructions:
  • Webflow — our website hosting platform. Webflow processes visitor data (IP, request logs) as part of serving the site. See Webflow's privacy policy.
  • Google Analytics — anonymous usage analytics (only if you've accepted analytics cookies). See Google's privacy policy.
  • Mailchimp — stores and sends our newsletter. When you subscribe, your data is stored with them. See Mailchimp's privacy policy.
We may also disclose your information if required by law (e.g., in response to a valid legal request) or to protect our rights, safety, or the rights and safety of others.

6. Data Retention

We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your personal information to outside parties. This does not include trusted third parties who assist us in operating our website or conducting our business, as long as those parties agree to keep this information confidential.
  • Newsletter data — retained as long as you're subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we delete your data within 90 days.
  • Contact form messages — retained for up to 2 years to keep a record of correspondence, then deleted.
  • Analytics data — aggregated and anonymous data is retained for up to 26 months (Google Analytics default).
You can ask us to delete your data sooner — see Section 8.

7. International Data Transfers

Our service providers (Webflow, Google, our newsletter provider) may process your data in countries outside your own, including the United States. Where that happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and Standard Contractual Clauses to ensure your data is protected to the same standard as it would be in your country.

8. Your Rights

You have rights over your personal data. The specific rights depend on where you live, but the main ones include:
  • Right to access — you can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to correct — you can ask us to fix inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Right to delete — you can ask us to delete your data (except where we have a legal obligation to keep it).
  • Right to object or opt out — you can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the unsubscribe link in every email. You can opt out of analytics via our cookie banner.
  • Right to data portability — you can request a machine-readable copy of the data you've provided.
  • Right to lodge a complaint — if you're in the EU, UK, or EEA, you can complain to your local data protection authority. If you're in California, you can exercise your CCPA/CPRA rights including the right to know, delete, and opt out of the sale of personal information (we don't sell personal information).
To exercise any of these rights, email support@theidiomdaily.com. We'll respond within 30 days.

9. Children's Privacy

The Idiom Daily is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU). We don't knowingly collect personal information from children in this age range. If you believe we've collected data from a child, please contact us and we'll delete it.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time as the site evolves or laws change. When we make changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we'll also notify you via the newsletter or a banner on the site.
