What it means...

Saying one thing to someone's face but acting differently behind their back.

A two-faced person is dishonest and insincere — they pretend to be friendly while secretly behaving in the opposite way.

It is used to describe someone who cannot be trusted because they are hypocritical.

Use it when…

  • When someone acts friendly to a person but talks negatively about them to others
  • When a colleague agrees with you in a meeting but undermines you later
  • When someone's public behavior directly contradicts how they act in private
