What it means...

To miss an opportunity because you acted too late.

When you miss the boat, the chance to do or gain something has already passed and it is now too late to take advantage of it.

It is used when someone hesitates or delays and the opportunity is no longer available.

Use it when…

  • When someone waits too long to apply for a job or programme
  • When a company fails to enter a market before competitors dominate it
  • When someone buys tickets or registers after spots fill up
