What it means...

To join a popular trend, movement, or activity simply because others are doing it — often without careful thought.

When you jump on the bandwagon, you follow the crowd rather than forming your own independent opinion.

It is often used slightly negatively to suggest someone is being opportunistic or unoriginal.

Use it when…

  • When companies start adding a trendy feature only because competitors are doing it
  • When someone suddenly becomes a fan of a team or movement only after it becomes popular
  • When people adopt a position or trend without genuinely understanding or believing in it

Don’t confuse with...

Wrong icon

"Follow the Crowd"

Doing what most other people do without thinking independently about the choice

Wrong icon

"Go with the Flow"

Accepting what is happening without resistance, in a relaxed rather than opportunistic way

Correct icon

"Jump on the Bandwagon"

Joining a popular trend primarily because it has become fashionable rather than out of genuine belief
