What it means...

Something that sounds simple to suggest but is actually much harder to put into practice.

When you say something is easier said than done, you acknowledge that while the advice or idea makes sense, doing it in real life is more difficult than it sounds.

It is used to temper overly simple advice.

Use it when…

  • When someone gives advice that is logical but ignores how difficult it is in practice
  • When a goal sounds straightforward but has many real-world obstacles
  • When you want to acknowledge that an idea is good while being realistic about the challenge
